Captured Colours

Captured Colours

This one of the captured French flags taken at the first battle of Windmill Hill, fought at around 5 or 6 on the morning of 6th May. The flag-poles are original but the fabric has been replaced.

Walker’s Diary recounts that the defenders “…kill’d Two hundred of their Men, most of which were shot  through the Breast or Head…Our side lost Three men and had only Twenty wounded. At this time we took Five pairs of colours”

Mackenzie’s Diary: “…In this action we got four or five colours, several drums, firearms, some ammunition and good store of spades, shovels and pick-axes”.
