9th July 1689

A view of Inch Island taken from Rathmullan Pier in Lough Swilly ( The Lake of Shadows), County Donegal.

From Richards’ Diary of the Fleet:
“Tuesday 9th [July 1689]. The wind easterly we set sail, and got into the Lough Swilly up as high as the island Inch over against Rathmullan where we anchored for this night. Several people ran down to the shore: we sent a boat to them to fetch them off. They informed us of a great herd of cattle at a place called Tully about six miles from Rathmullan, kept only by the country people who had no arms, and that in their way they could surprise an Irish cornet and twelve dragoons in case we would send forty or fifty armed men with them. We considered it, and according to their several reports finding it feasible, one Captain Echlin, Lieutenant Rigot and Lieut. Hart, with sixty musketeers, were set ashore about twelve o’clock at night, with such necessary instructions as were needful to give them.”
