12th July 1689

Butcher’s Gate on Derry’s walls. From Captain Ash’s Diary:

“12th [July 1689] The battering pieces played greatly against the town, and at night Butchers-gate was made up in the inside with stones, earth, and sods, and a place left only at the wicket to go out at.

The prisoners who were taken the 13th of June were enlarged, and sent off.”[ Enlargement -A setting at large, or being set at large; release from confinement, servitude, or distress; liberty]
